Architecting for uncertainty - part 3: GenAI as an amplifier

This is the third in a series of articles based on my talk Architecting for Fast Flow: Thriving Amid Uncertainty. In this series, I define the term fast flow and explain why it has become an essential software delivery capability. I discuss how fast flow emerges from a socio-technical architecture, which consists of a software architecture and its development organization. Finally, I describe how to design and evolve a socio-technical architecture in order to sustain fast flow.

The articles in the series are:

  1. Thriving in a VUCA world requires frequent deployment
  2. Fast flow defined
  3. GenAI as an amplifier

Part 2 explained that an organization that wants to thrive in a VUCA world must practice fast flow: deliver a continuous stream of small changes to production, and continually learn from feedback from users and from production.

GenAI coding agents amplify an organization's capabilities: high-performing organizations get faster flow, low-performing organizations get slower flow

Given all the hype, you might think that fast flow can be achieved by simply using GenAI coding agents. In this article, however, I explain why GenAI alone cannot guarantee fast flow. You will learn how GenAI amplifies an organization’s existing software delivery capabilities, for better or for worse.
